      <image:title>Blog - Working with A Dash of Craft - Call me biased, but I knew I was going to work with A Dash of Craft for my wedding day. This is partly because the owner Aasiyah is my friend, and mostly because she does DOPE work. I wanted her to work her magic in whatever way felt best, and I was overjoyed by the results.</image:title>
      <image:caption>A Dash of Craft created both a mehndi backdrop for our mehndi event, and also a backdrop for our small reception stage (more pics coming!). I wanted the mehndi background to be bright and colourful, but asked for something understated and elegant for the reception.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Going Grey: A lesson in Self Compassion - Black hair feels as desi as roti and rice. That’s why my first white hair in high school felt like an anomaly. There was no way I could have let it live in my curtain of black hair, so naturally, it was pulled out. The next few hairs were nonchalantly plucked away, though they were now being found too frequently for my liking. Their numbers continued to grow, and I curried favour from my older sister to help me manage them. She had white hairs as well - and I’d help her remove hers if she helped me remove mine. Still, they continued to multiply.</image:title>
      <image:caption>I’d spend hours in front of the mirror with a fine tipped eyebrow tweezer, searching for the white hair that didn’t belong. Each tweeze of hair caused a twinge of pain, and yet I’d continue on - no one said beauty was ever easy! I’d worry more and more about my white strands, and how abnormal it was to have them at my age, not to mention in my perfectly black desi hair!</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5f10e64348a48f7370dc6028/b06d6028-e084-4cf0-a12a-fcf6edc0dd4e/IMG_20210305_115350.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - Going Grey: A lesson in Self Compassion - As my white hair continued to grow, I saw greater and greater disdain for my deviation from the norm. I’ve seen and heard outright disgust for my hair, have been told to dye it because it’s ugly, and have been told that it’s not “normal”. I can still remember waiting at the bus stop, and seeing a man do a double take at me out of the corner of my eye. “How old are you?!” I couldn’t help but laugh! Most folks I know have white hair that they dye or pluck. I’ve even known a few like me who have had white hair since high school. We’ve been taught by society that youth has one face, beauty; only one guide. Going against social norms with my own body resulted in discomfort and confusion for others, but provided me with greater clarity as to who I want to be.</image:title>
      <image:caption>The last and most important reason I decided to go grey had to do with my grandmothers. For the 3 decades that I’ve known them, they have had white hair. When I began to let my white hair grow, I became more aware of their hair, and my feelings for them.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Let your Fruit be Fruitful. - Depletion of this public domain, or commons, can be done in a variety of ways, but the main idea is that we take something that was free or available to all people and add it to the monetized, private realm to necessitate economic growth. In doing so, we lose obligation to one another, reject our innate need for relationship, and make something that was available to all only available to those who can pay. An example of this is childcare, where children receive care by entire communities at no monetary cost, nor with a monetary value assigned.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - Let your Fruit be Fruitful. - There is a tree in my Grandmother’s backyard in India that is called a “Bili Patra nu jhad”. In English, it is known as a Bael tree, spiritually aligned to Lord Shivaji. The leaves of this tree are offered to Shivaji in prayer, but that is not the only thing that makes it sacred. This tree belongs to all village members. It is a part of the commons. When I am in India, village members will trickle through our yard in small groups, heading to the Bili Patra tree to pick its leaves. They call out to my Grandmother as they go. “Dahi Kaki, we’re here to pick leaves!”, “Dahi Kaki, we’re going to pick Bili Patra leaves!” My grandma, my baa, responds with an “oh right, go!” or “ah, okay, pick them, pick them.” Her response is never a “no” because she doesn’t have any power over this tree. Its spirituality and importance to Hinduism means that it overrides the construct of ownership by an individual. It is owned by all folks as a part of the commons.</image:title>
      <image:caption>What if we extended this spirit of public ownership to other trees?</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5f10e64348a48f7370dc6028/1634050604677-PHGIJRAYQHPLP82QT6Q4/IMG_20191127_080525.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - Let your Fruit be Fruitful. - I imagine a Toronto, a GTA, and a wider world where fruit trees become a part of a gift economy. Where fruit trees become part of a public domain, to be enjoyed and owned by all. Year after year I see trees laden with fruit, only to watch them overripen and brown on their stems. Apples, pears, apricots and more fall to the ground and ferment, for the cycle to begin again next year. Can you imagine the ways in which a fruitful gift could be of benefit to others?</image:title>
      <image:caption>Charles Eisenstein argues that a gift economy creates obligation and relationship because a gift economy only works when the gift given or received is useful, wanted, needed, or helpful. You can get to know your community, they can get to know you as well, and your relationship to one another in the New Earth grows. Imagine opening up your fruit trees to families and community members who can benefit from your offered gift. Imagine the abundance of gifts and connection that will come your way. This gift economy asks for your trust, goodness, and selflessness, but I believe that opening ourselves up to the universe will bring us unimaginable experiences and joys we do not know under capitalism.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Hip Hop and Mindfulness: J.Cole’s KOD. - Pain can be defined in a variety of ways. I like to think of it as discomfort that we feel in the body, the mind, and for some folks, in the spirit or energy. This can be a feeling of nausea in the stomach, the clenching of our jaws during stress, or even goosebumps on the back of the neck when encountering someone who gives you “a bad vibe”.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Pain can also be called suffering, as it’s known in Buddhist and Hindu circles. While this suffering might sound like a negative thing, it doesn’t always have to be. We can view suffering as something communal (which, incidentally, is helpful in decolonizing our wellness) as everyone on this planet deals with some sort of pain. This is pain that we all go through, so we need not try to hide it. We can meet our suffering and the suffering of others with kindness, compassion and love.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Gratitude Practice - What is Gratitude and Gratitude Practice? Gratitude is a deep appreciation for all things. It is a feeling of thankfulness that can overwhelm the self when we pause and consider our connectiveness. Gratitude Practice is the focus of that appreciation and love into ritual and awareness. Gratitude then becomes something we we intentionally do in our lives, and in turn may help us deepen our connection to all things around us. The beauty of gratitude is that we can practice it in a number of ways.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - Dear Brown People: Stop Saying the n-word, Start Saying Black Lives Matter - When I was younger, downtown Toronto was still diverse, and I grew up in a lower middle class area with many BIPOC. This meant that I was constantly around people who shared my skin colour - Black, Desi, Asian, Latino, etc. Our melanin gave us something in common: It meant we weren't white, and didn't experience the same level of privilege as white folk - this is something I learned at the very young age of about 6. Now, when you’re a young brown child in Toronto, the dominant cultural groups around you are either white or Black. For the most part you’re able to retain your own culture’s diversity at home, but in a school or public setting, white and Black culture take dominance. As a young brown child in a lower middle class area, you begin to take on dominant Black culture as your own, because that is where you can see more of yourself and your classmates. I want to come back to the above, but first I want to make note of how our intersections can still create difference. Even while I was able to see myself in Black culture, being brown in this country still meant a number of things. It meant: You will never quite "belong". You will "belong" more than other BIPOC. You fit in with the model minority myth. Your brownness will be held above blackness.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Why are these 4 points important? They reveal how our identity intersections converge to give us varying amounts of privilege. As an example, the 2016 census revealed that Toronto was majorly a city of BIPOC, and while this might look like greater representation and diversity for all of us, understanding our intersections reveal how very little has changed in terms of what white privilege will do for you. Company executive teams are still majorly white, BIPOC are being pushed out of a city that is getting more and more unaffordable, and resumes with names that don’t sound Anglophonic are being thrown in the trash. Understanding how our intersections work can help us see how we all carry varying levels of privilege, which is something I’m still continuing to learn. Now, back to our 4 points. While each of these points work in tandem to promote white power and privilege, I'm mostly concerned with the last one.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - The Decapitation of the Buddha - Buddha was born in Lumbini, Nepal.</image:title>
      <image:caption>He was originally born with the name Siddhartha in the high-ranking Hindu caste, Kshatriya. It is said that existential crises led Siddhartha to renounce his Kshatriya class and develop his own path when he was unsatisfied with some of the teachings and answers of the broad Hindu religion. Thus, Buddhism was born, and with it a great spiritual leader. There are over 8 million Buddhists in India, and over 70% of the Sri Lankan population is Buddhist. The religion spread widely in East Asian countries, and that is where it is most popular. Countries with over 90% Buddhist populations include Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar/Burma. These people practice Buddhism as a religion, and it is also a part of their culture. The two are necessarily intertwined. Unfortunately, many Buddhists face persecution because of their religion at the hands of others.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - The Decapitation of the Buddha - Neo-religious and Anglophonic pagan traditions have begun severing Buddhist traditions from their religious fabric. This has become a problem of appropriation with Anglophonic people who are generally privileged, white, and lack a concrete religion or spirituality of their own. Simply put, they are picking and choosing the parts of Buddhism that they like, and discarding the rest in their efforts to appear or act “spiritual”. This often includes disregarding the struggles and racism against practicing Buddhists and those located and from East Asia even while using their religion.</image:title>
      <image:caption>For the most part, it is the aesthetics of Asian religions that are pleasing, as these support the need to be seen as spiritual by others. These aesthetic items include yoga poses on Instagram, mala beads to match Lululemon attire, and icons in the home that include Buddha and Budai- many people may be hard pressed to tell you the difference between the two. This is because Buddhism has been ripped from its religious foundations, and turned into a trendy aesthetic for neo-spiritual Anglophones.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About - My name is Bhumika Patel…</image:title>
      <image:caption>I’m a mindfulness advocate and DEI/EDI specialist from Tkaronto, the traditional territories of the Huron-Wendat, the Haudenosaunee, and the Anishinaabe peoples. Many of us currently know this area as Toronto, ON. I combine diversity, equity, and inclusion strategy with mindfulness to make DEI learning a mental as well as somatic practice. I support schools, businesses, and groups around Toronto with anti-racism and diversity strategy, mindfulness, and team building through mindfulness.</image:caption>
